Flight tracking made simple

Hey, fellow travelers:

At last count, I had a whopping 103 Travel Tips compiled. Each week I’ll highlight one or two tips based on the most common questions I’ve been fielding recently.

If any of you have booked a flight recently you will have noticed that the price of flying has become exorbitant. Well, maybe not ridiculously so for domestic flights in the U.S., but international flights have surged. I typically track flights starting from the time I am even remotely interested in a destination so I can see exactly what the trends are over the course of a year. I’ll give you two examples, I have noticed a marked uptick in the cost to fly to locations like Singapore and Ghana over the past year – I’m talking several hundred dollars in both cases. For those wondering how I noticed the price increase and how I’ve kept track – it’s pretty simple (and, no, no Excel spreadsheets were harmed during this exercise). Check out tips 11 and 12 from my article Travel Tips…a LOT of travel tips to see how I do it.

11. LOOKING FOR BUDGET FLIGHTS? SKYSCANNER IS YOUR FRIEND
Skyscanner is a great resource when traveling on a budget because it consistently finds the cheapest deals when you are flexible on your travel dates and destinations. You can also set price alerts to be notified when the price on a flight you are tracking changes.

12. USE GOOGLE FLIGHTS TO TRACK FLIGHTS AND SET PRICE ALERTS
I start all of my flight searches on Google Flights. Due to my work schedule and the typical length of my trips (three weeks), I have to be pretty strategic about my travel dates so I plug in my destinations and tentative dates. Google shows you the prices to fly each day in a given month, I manipulate my departure dates and times to get the best deals then set a flight alert and let the app do all the work. I, typically, start this process as much as a year out so I can see the progression of the prices and have opportunities to take advantage of any sales or discounts. You may be wondering, “isn’t that risky purchasing a flight several months in advance when anything can happen?” This, my friends, is where travel insurance with a “cancel for any reason” clause enters the fray. (Trust me – there shall definitely be a future post on the absolute necessity of travel insurance coming to a device near you soon).
